This presentation will describe how a medium-sized public university far from the publishing centers of the country has developed a strong certificate program based on practical training and mentoring. We put students to work on manuscripts for magazines and books that are in production with publishers, and give them the kind of on-the-job training and feedback that most students don’t get until their first job. Our students edit a literary magazine, work as editorial assistants at a literary press, edit two book manuscripts for a regional nonfiction publisher, and serve an internship with a book or magazine publisher.

I have worked in literary and scholarly publishing since 1980 and now coordinate the certificate program in literary editing and publishing at CSU, Chico. I have worked for Scholars Press, done freelance editing, and, since 1984, directed Flume Press, a small publisher of poetry and fiction chapbooks. Since 2001, I have coordinated the literary editing and publishing program at CSU, Chico, where our students edit and publish a literary magazine (since 1977) and work as editorial assistants at Flume Press, now affiliated with the university. I also serve as the university’s publication editor, in the Office of Public Affairs and Publications.
