For almost 150 years, map publishing was dominated by three publishing houses based in Edinburgh Scotland. This paper, based on an on-going research project, outlines the history of the three great Edinburgh map publishers, Bartholomew, Johnston and Bacon and Gall and Inglis. These organisations were both competitive and co-operative and for most of the twentieth centurym maps and atlases in the global marketplace were dominated by these publishers. The paper charts their growth, flourishing and demise and places them within the context of book history and publishing technology.
