On the Optimal Use of the Print Collection in the Digitalization Epoch

This paper discusses the possibility of making the best use of the print collection resources in the University Library in the context of digitalization in the epoch of highly advanced science and technology. The author argues that in the environment of the Internet, the virtual collection and the print collection should be combined optimally to complement each other for the best type of information service. From various aspects, the paper illustrates the advantages of the print collection and suggests,continuing raising the quality and quantity of the print collection. What is important in this process is to guarantee the highest application efficiency by optimizing the structure of the print collection. This can be done by sorting, discarding, protecting and re-using the out-of-date resources and continually renew the print collection by adding new materials as well. The paper also describes the methods of training high quality staff members, developing individualized services, and optimizing service qualities in the university library.
