The Graphic Novel: Engaging New Literacies
Educators are beginning to take notice of the graphic novel. This allows a new way to interest students in texts, but, even more important, challenges educators to engage students in multiple literacies. The graphic novel opens up the curriculum to visual literacy, information literacy, and media literacy.
Prepared teachers can help students think critically about the information and ideas they see and hear as well as read; traditional print literacy is necessary but not sufficient for citizens in a media dominated age. This paper will examine the new curriculum opportunities offered by the graphic novel.
