Hearing What's Read
The dematerialization of the book, even beyond the illusion of form visible on a screen, back to the spoken word, stored in audio files, has potentially profound implications for our understanding of the idea of authority in its sense as an assigned social or academic status that influences the the thoughts and actions of others. Readings by authors, audio documentaries or features—which might comprise interviews, commentaries, and sound effects— and audio plays are all vested with different degrees of authority that can still be traced back to the written word.
