This paper considers the challenges of developing a core list of monographs in an area of the humanities. The authors take as an example Resources for College Libraries, the 50,000-title undergraduate core list currently being developed by the ACRL (Dr. Elmore is the Project Editor; Dr. Abbott is the Subject Editor for European History). Specifically, this paper examines the subject-specific considerations encountered in building core lists for literary studies and history; the role of monographic materials in undergraduate teaching in the humanities; and the difficulties and strengths of collaboration between teaching faculty and academic librarians in developing core lists.
