Future Memories: A Case Study of a Student Book Publication in the Middle East
This case study will outline the project’s two goals of publication design education and community cultural meaning contribution and their supporting objectives. Following this will be an evaluation of six significant aspects that make this project worthy of a case study. These six aspects are:
1. The collaborative nature of this book development and design.
2. The “in-process” project development documentation that will be designed and published as two
“16 page newspaper” editions that will be distributed to the local community in one of the five local newspapers of doha as well as being incorporated into the final packaged distribution of the book.
3. The “local-designer as author” basis of the relationship of the book’s form and content
4. The publishing and distribution of this book within a context that does not have a highly developed tradition of books.
5. The development and publishing of individual student perspectives within a small and collective
society where social dynamics typically place restrictive pressure on individual disclosure, free
thought, and public discourse.
6. The educational and service value of a student publication project produced and distrubuted in the
local community with the aim of establishing a meaningful point of reference to a society
experiencing the turbulance of rapid change.
